Preparing for HR salary talks when you only get one window

Published for candidates mid-process · ~5 min read

Laptop open for preparation work

Some German processes give you a dedicated compensation call; others fold the topic into a final hiring manager conversation. Either way, you may get one clean window. Salary negotiation planning should treat that window like a short performance with a script and two backups.

Checklist the night before

  • Write your opening range in one sentence you can say without looking down.
  • List two concessions you can offer that do not collapse the corridor.
  • Prepare one clarifying question about bonus mechanics or remote policy.
  • Decide your walk-away and keep it off the call unless needed.

During the call

Let HR finish the frame. Answer the question that was asked, then add one clarifying detail—not three. If you need time, ask for it explicitly and propose when you will return with a written confirmation of your position.
