Timing
When a counteroffer still makes sense after a verbal yes
Published for candidates mid-process · ~6 min read
Verbal enthusiasm is not a signed contract. In German processes, candidates often say yes to the direction of an offer and then receive a written package that differs in bonus structure, remote policy, or start logistics. Salary negotiation planning still has a window—if you move carefully.
The 48-hour discipline
Once the PDF arrives, give yourself a short, deliberate review window. Note every delta from the verbal summary. Silence longer than a few business days without acknowledgment can look like soft acceptance even when you are still calculating.
Reopen with facts, not regret
Frame the follow-up as clarifying the written terms against the conversation you valued. Point to specific lines. Avoid narrating anxiety. Employers respond better to precise deltas than to a general request to “improve the package.”
When not to push
If the employer documented a non-negotiable tarif step and you already accepted that framing, a late base ask can damage trust without moving numbers. Shift to start date, equipment, or learning budget only when those levers are actually open.
